How to play a nonogram

Numbers along the top and left edges tell you how many filled squares run together in that row or column. Satisfy every clue and a hidden picture appears.

  1. Read a clue. A clue of 3 1 means a run of three filled squares, then at least one blank square, then a run of one. The order is fixed and the gaps can be longer than one square.
  2. Fill squares. Pick Fill and tap a cell, or press and drag to paint a whole run in a single stroke.
  3. Mark the blanks. Pick Mark, right-click on desktop, or long-press on a phone to leave an ×. Marks are notes — they never count as filled.
  4. Start from the longest clue. A clue of 7 in a 12-wide line always fills the two middle squares, whichever way the block slides. Every cell you prove also shortens the lines that cross it.
  5. Finish the picture. When the filled squares match every clue the grid locks, your time is recorded, and today is stamped on your calendar.

Every puzzle on NonoClue is generated and then run through a constraint solver. Grids with more than one solution are thrown away, and so are grids that cannot be finished with row-and-column logic alone — so you never have to guess. The result is a pixel picture that takes most people three to eight minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Is NonoClue free?
Yes. One puzzle a day, free, with no account, no paywall and no email required.
Do I need to sign up?
No. Your progress, streak and best time are saved in your own browser on this device. Clearing site data or switching browsers starts you fresh.
How big are the grids?
Sizes rotate through the week: 8×8 early in the week, 12×12 midweek, 16×16 on weekends — small enough for a phone, dense enough to be a puzzle.
Do the puzzles ever require guessing?
No. Puzzles with more than one solution, or that need a guess to break through, are rejected before publishing.
When does a new puzzle appear?
At midnight in your local time. Everyone playing on the same calendar day gets the same grid, so results are comparable.
What happens to my streak if I miss a day?
It restarts at one on your next solve. Your solved days stay on the calendar and your best time is kept.
